7 tips to keep your baby warm during cold days

Getting some fresh air with your baby is lovely, even when it’s cold. But dressing your baby warm enough for colder days can feel like a challenge. How do you keep your baby warm in your stroller, pram or car seat? We give you 7 tips.

1. Warm your stroller with a jug

Jugs are often used to warm the beds or clothes of newborn babies. Why not put it in the carrycot of your stroller? This way your baby has a preheated bed and the transition from the warmth of your home to the cold air outside is smaller.

2. Dress your baby with layers

There is one rule of thumb when dressing your baby for the outdoors: always put one layer extra on your baby than you have on yourself. For example, put your baby in:
- A long sleeve bodysuit
- A baby jumpsuit
- An overall or snowsuit
- A hat: your baby loses most of its warmth through its head, so a heat is a must!
- A scarf
- Mittens
- Slippers

Are you taking your baby with you in a baby carrier? Make sure there is no bare skin showing. Put slippers on your babies feet, over their pants, and mittens on their hands. Or put an extra blanket over the carrier and under your coat. This way you make sure your baby stays warm.

3. Keep your baby warm in a footmuff

A preheated carrycot is nice and warm for your baby, but you will lose most of the warmth when you step outside. Put your baby in a footmuff in your car seat, stroller or pram. Our Lodger footmuffs are usable in all seats with 3- or 5-point belts. Or choose a warm Wrapper to put in the carrycot of your stroller. Thanks to the close-fitting hood on our footmuffs and the Velcro closures you wrap up your little one nice and warm for all your adventures in the cold winter air.

4. Protect your baby’s skin from the cold

The cold air is good for you and your baby, but it can impact your baby’s sensitive skin. Protect the skin against the cold and put on some ointment like vaseline on your baby’s cheeks. We recommend using soft materials that don’t itch for hats and mittens. Merino wool for example. This material regulates the warmth and is very soft. Ideal for the sensitive baby skin!

5. Check your baby’s temperature

Not sure if your baby is dressed warm enough? Feel their neck. Does it feel warm and not clammy? Then you’re alright! Does it feel clammy and sticky? Then it is better to take a layer off your baby. Cover your baby with an extra blanket when the neck feels cool or cold. Check your baby’s hands too. Do they look a little blue or purple? It is best to tuck them away in a warm footmuff or put mittens on them.

6. Shield your baby from the cold wind

If there is a cold wind you can easily shield your baby by putting the sunshade of your stroller up. This way your baby is warm and sheltered from the cold. Do you have a stroller without sunshade? Then close the footmuff as high as possible and try walking a sheltered route. Or stretch a blanket or hydrophilic cloth over your stroller and secure it with our Swaddle clips. Just make sure your baby still gets plenty of fresh air.

7. Shorten your adventures if necessary

Is your baby starting to cry because it is hungry, needs a diaper change or is getting cold? Shorten your walk and return home. Cuddly with your baby in a soft wrapper until it is warm again and try going for a walk another day!

Conclusie

By dressing your baby in layers of clothes, it will stay nice and warm. Think of overalls, slippers and hats. A preheated Lodger footmuff retains the warmth of your baby. Keep a close eye on your baby while walking: check if they are not too warm or cold and return home when your baby is uncomfortable.
